If you have cockroaches in your Bondi Beach home right now, you want two things: someone local who knows the eastern suburbs, and a treatment that actually clears the problem instead of scattering the roaches for a fortnight. That is what we do. PestOz is a family owned pest control business based in Bondi, and German cockroaches are our stated specialty. We treat homes and apartments with child and pet friendly products, and we book you a specific appointment time, not a four hour window that eats your morning.
This guide answers the questions people actually ask us when they call about cockroaches: why the eastern suburbs get them, how to tell which species you have, what a real treatment involves, and how long it takes to work. It is written from years of jobs across Bondi, Bondi Junction and the surrounding streets, not from a textbook.
Why Bondi Beach and the Eastern Suburbs Have a Cockroach Problem
The short answer
Bondi Beach and the eastern suburbs are close to ideal for cockroaches: warm, humid, densely built, and packed with food.
Cockroaches need warmth, moisture and something to eat, and coastal apartment living hands them all three. A few local factors make it worse:
- Dense apartment blocks and terraces. Shared walls, ceiling cavities and common pipework let roaches move between units. One infested kitchen can seed a whole floor.
- Older buildings. Many eastern suburbs blocks are decades old, with gaps around plumbing, tired kitchen joinery and cracks that give roaches somewhere to hide and breed.
- Hospitality density. Cafes, restaurants and takeaway venues along the beach and through Bondi Junction create constant food sources, and roaches spread outward from there.
- Warm, humid summers. Sydney’s coastal climate keeps cockroach activity high for much of the year. Our month by month pest activity guide covers when each species peaks.
None of this means your home is dirty. German cockroaches in particular hitch a ride in on shopping bags, cardboard boxes, secondhand appliances and deliveries. Spotless kitchens get them too.
German Cockroaches vs. Australian Cockroaches: Which One Is in Your Home?
The short answer
Small, light brown roaches with two dark stripes behind the head, living indoors, are German cockroaches. Big reddish brown roaches that fly and come in from outside are Australian or American cockroaches.
The species matters, because it changes the entire treatment. The two you will meet in the eastern suburbs are the German cockroach and the larger Australian and American cockroaches.
German cockroaches are the small ones, roughly 12 to 15mm, light brown, with two dark stripes running down the back of the head. You will find them indoors, clustered in warm, tight spaces: behind the fridge, inside the kettle base, in the cutlery drawer, around the dishwasher and under the sink. They breed fast, a single female can be responsible for thousands of descendants in a year, and they rarely leave the building. If you see small roaches in your kitchen during the day, you almost certainly have German cockroaches, and the population is already large.
Australian and American cockroaches are the big ones, 30 to 40mm, reddish brown, and they fly. These tend to come in from outside: garden beds, drains, subfloors, garbage areas and roof voids. You will often see one at night in the bathroom or laundry. They are unpleasant but they do not breed indoors at the runaway pace German cockroaches do.
Here is the quick comparison people ask for:
| Feature | German cockroach | Australian / American cockroach |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 12 to 15mm | 30 to 40mm |
| Colour | Light brown, two stripes | Reddish brown |
| Where they live | Indoors, kitchens and bathrooms | Mostly outdoors, come in |
| Breeding speed | Very fast, indoors | Slower, less indoor breeding |
| Flies? | No | Yes |
| Hardest to clear? | Yes | Usually easier |
If you are not sure which you have, take a photo and send it through when you book. Getting the species right first saves you a wasted treatment. Our German cockroach identification guide has close-up photos of adults, nymphs and egg cases.
What Does a Professional Cockroach Exterminator Actually Do?
The short answer
A professional cockroach treatment is not one spray around the skirting boards. For German cockroaches especially, it is a targeted program built around where they actually live and breed.
Here is how we approach it.
- Inspection first. We find the harbourage points, the warm, hidden spots where roaches cluster. In a kitchen that usually means the fridge motor, the dishwasher, the sink cabinet, drawer runners and the gaps behind the kickboards.
- Identify the species and the source. A German cockroach job and a large-roach job are treated differently. We also look for how they got in, whether that is a delivery, a shared wall, or a drain.
- Targeted gel bait for German cockroaches. Gel bait placed precisely where roaches feed is the workhorse for German cockroaches. They eat it, return to the harbourage, and the effect carries through the population. This is deliberate, placed work, not a blanket spray.
- Perimeter and crack-and-crevice treatment where appropriate. For the larger outdoor species, we treat entry points, subfloor and external harbourage to stop them coming in.
- Advice and follow-up. We tell you what to fix, from leaking taps to gaps around pipes, and for heavy German cockroach infestations a follow-up visit is often part of clearing them properly.
- Fridge motor. Warm, dark and rarely cleaned behind.
- Kettle base. Heat and crumbs on the bench.
- Sink cabinet. Moisture from pipes and leaking taps.
- Dishwasher. Warmth, water and food residue.
- Cutlery drawer runners. Tight gaps close to food.
- Behind the kickboards. An unseen strip along every cabinet.
The difference between a treatment that works and one that does not is almost always the inspection and the placement. Roaches killed at the harbourage do not come back a week later.
Are Cockroach Treatments Safe for Kids and Pets?
The short answer
Yes. Modern cockroach treatments, applied by a licensed technician, are safe for households with children and pets when used as directed.
This is something we take seriously, because most of the homes we treat in the eastern suburbs have both. A few points worth knowing:
Being licensed, fully certified and insured is not a slogan for us. It means the products, the doses and the placements are handled by someone trained to keep your family safe while clearing the pest.
How Long Does It Take to Get Rid of Cockroaches After Treatment?
The short answer
For large outdoor cockroaches, you will usually see a sharp drop within a few days. For German cockroaches, expect noticeable improvement within the first week or two, with the population fully knocked down over a few weeks as the bait works through the colony and newly hatched nymphs feed on it.
What affects the timeline:
- How large the infestation is. A population that has been building for months takes longer to clear than one caught early.
- The species. German cockroaches breed continuously, so treatment has to keep working as eggs hatch. That is why one visit is sometimes not enough for a heavy job.
- What you do afterwards. Wiping away food residue, fixing moisture and not spraying supermarket products over the bait all speed things up.
A word of warning
Seeing a few roaches in the days after treatment is normal and often a good sign. It usually means they are out of their hiding spots and taking bait. Do not reach for a can of fly spray, because that scatters survivors and can undo the treatment.
Cockroach Control for Apartments and Strata Buildings in the Eastern Suburbs
The short answer
Cockroaches in an apartment are rarely just your problem. In eastern suburbs blocks, German cockroaches move through shared walls, riser cupboards, plumbing voids and common areas, which means treating a single unit sometimes only pushes them next door.
For renters and owners, the practical steps are:
- Treat your own unit properly, ideally with a technician who knows apartment layouts.
- Tell your strata manager or building manager if you suspect roaches are coming from common areas or a neighbouring unit.
- Keep records, because end-of-lease and routine treatments are easier when there is a paper trail.
For strata managers, building managers and body corporate committees, a coordinated approach across affected units and common areas is the only thing that reliably clears a building-wide German cockroach problem. We work with strata and property management portfolios across the eastern suburbs, and larger property managers already rely on us for exactly this kind of work. We are Strata Council affiliated and an SMATA member, and our guide to strata and apartment pest control walks committees through how to handle it. If you manage a block, our office and commercial building pest control service covers common areas and hospitality tenancies too.
The advantage of a local, family run operator here is simple: we know these buildings, we turn up at a set time so residents can plan around access, and we do not disappear after one visit.
Why DIY Products Keep Failing Against German Cockroaches
The short answer
Supermarket sprays and bombs fail against German cockroaches because they treat the surface, not the source, and they often make the infestation worse.
This is the single most common reason people finally call us. Here is what goes wrong:
- Surface sprays miss the harbourage. German cockroaches live packed into tight, hidden spaces. Spraying skirting boards and benchtops kills a handful of foragers while the breeding population sits untouched behind the fridge.
- Foggers and bombs scatter them. A bomb drives roaches deeper into wall voids and neighbouring rooms, spreading the problem instead of solving it.
- Repellent products fight the bait. If you spray a repellent over an area where gel bait is working, roaches avoid the zone and stop feeding, which stalls the whole treatment.
- They breed faster than you can spray. With a female producing egg cases full of nymphs, killing the adults you can see does nothing about the next generation already on the way.
DIY has its place for the odd large roach wandering in from the garden. Against an established German cockroach population, it almost always ends with the same call. Our guide on preventing cockroach infestations covers the housekeeping that genuinely helps, but prevention and eradication are different jobs.
