How do I get rid of German cockroaches?

Getting rid of German cockroaches means treating the places they breed, not the ones you see. A professional job puts gel bait and an insect growth regulator into the cracks, voids and appliances where the colony hides, then comes back to catch the young that hatch from egg cases the first visit could not reach. Surface sprays alone rarely work.

The German cockroach is the small, tan roach that lives indoors all year, and it is the one most kitchens in Sydney are dealing with. It spends the day packed into tight, warm gaps: behind kickboards, under the sink, in cabinet hinges, inside the dishwasher door and around the fridge motor. Those gaps are where a treatment has to go.

  • Inspection. Kitchen, bathroom, laundry and every appliance that runs warm. We are looking for droppings like ground pepper, egg cases, shed skins and live roaches, to map where the harbourage is.
  • Gel baiting. Small placements of gel bait in the cracks and voids they live in. Cockroaches feed on it and carry it back into the harbourage, which is how it reaches the ones you never see.
  • Insect growth regulator. Breaks the breeding cycle, so young roaches cannot grow into adults that breed.
  • Crack and crevice treatment. A targeted application into the voids behind kickboards, under benches and around plumbing, not a spray over your benchtops.
  • Second treatment. For an established infestation, a second full treatment at around 5 to 6 weeks, timed to catch the next generation hatching from egg cases.

How much does cockroach control cost in Sydney?

Cockroach control with PestOz is part of our general pest treatment, which starts from $218.90 including GST ($199 plus GST) for an apartment and $306.90 including GST ($279 plus GST) for a house. The one visit also covers ants and spiders. An established German cockroach infestation usually needs a second treatment, charged as a treatment in its own right, and we tell you that, and the price, before we start.

The starting price covers most homes, and you will know before we arrive whether yours is one of them. The jobs we quote separately are the heavy ones: a German cockroach population that has spread through a kitchen and into the walls, or a commercial kitchen that needs a regular program and paperwork for its food safety audits.

For what is included in a general treatment and what is priced on its own, see pest control costs in Sydney.

German, American, Australian or smoky brown: why the species changes the job

Sydney has four cockroaches worth knowing, and only one of them is a true indoor infestation. Which one you have decides where we treat and whether a supermarket spray was ever going to work. To tell them apart, see the German cockroach guide and the smoky brown cockroach guide.

Sydney's cockroaches and how each one is treated Typical for Sydney homes. Your technician confirms the species on the day.
CockroachWhere it livesHow we treat itWill a supermarket spray fix it?
German Indoors, all year. Kitchens, bathrooms, inside appliances and cabinet voids. Gel bait and growth regulator in the harbourage, crack and crevice treatment, then usually a second treatment at around 5 to 6 weeks. No. Repellent sprays scatter them deeper into the walls.
American Warm, damp places: drains, sub-floors, grease traps and commercial kitchens. Drains, sub-floor and entry points, plus baiting inside where they are foraging. Only the ones you can see. The source is usually in the drains.
Australian Mostly outdoors in gardens and sub-floors, wandering inside on warm nights. Outside: the perimeter, sub-floor and the gaps they come in through. Short term. They keep coming in from the garden.
Smoky brown Outdoors in trees, gardens, gutters and eaves. Mostly a summer pest. Outside: eaves, gutters, garden beds and entry points. Short term. The population lives outside the house.

Why do German cockroaches come back after spraying?

German cockroaches come back after spraying because most supermarket sprays and bombs repel them rather than reach the colony. The roaches you can see die or scatter, the rest move deeper into wall voids, appliances and the unit next door, and the egg cases keep hatching. A few weeks later the kitchen looks exactly as it did.

The University of California's pest management program puts it plainly: foggers, bombs and aerosol sprays "may repel and disperse cockroaches to other areas without actually killing them". In an apartment, the other area is often your neighbour's kitchen, which is where the next wave comes from.

Bait works the other way round. Cockroaches go looking for it, eat it and take it back into the harbourage, so it reaches the roaches that never come out while you are watching. That is also why we ask you not to spray between visits: a spray over the bait pushes them away from the one thing that is working.

For what you can do yourself between treatments, see how to prevent cockroach infestations in Australian homes.

How many treatments does it take to get rid of German cockroaches?

If you have an established German cockroach infestation, one treatment alone will not fix it. It usually takes two. The first treatment needs 4 to 5 weeks to work fully, then the second goes in at around weeks 5 to 6, to catch the young hatching from egg cases the first visit could not reach. The second visit is a whole new treatment, so it is charged as one.

The egg case is the whole reason German cockroaches are hard to clear:

  • Each case holds around 30 to 40 eggs. One female carrying one case is a new generation on its way.
  • She carries it with her. The female keeps the case attached for most of its roughly 30-day incubation, tucked away in the harbourage, and drops it a day or two before it hatches.
  • She does it again within weeks. A female can produce a new egg case every few weeks, which is how a handful of roaches becomes a kitchen full.

That cycle is why one treatment, however thorough, will not clear an established infestation, and why a cheap one-off spray tends to be the most expensive option over a year. When we quote, we tell you that you will need the second treatment and what it costs, so it is never a surprise after the first visit.

What to expect after the first visit. Seeing more cockroaches for a few days, sometimes in daylight, is normal. The treatment flushes them out of their hiding places before numbers fall. Leave the bait alone, keep food sealed and benches clear, and do not spray. The first treatment needs 4 to 5 weeks to do its work.

German cockroaches in apartments and strata buildings

In an apartment block, German cockroaches do not respect lot boundaries. They move between units through shared plumbing, wall cavities, risers and service ducts, so a heavy infestation in one kitchen tends to spread to the ones beside and above it. If you treat your unit and the one next door is not treated, you will often see them again.

The Eastern Suburbs make this a common job for us. Older walk-up blocks in Bondi, Bondi Beach, Coogee and Randwick share plumbing stacks and wall voids, and the mix of restaurants, cafes and apartments in the same buildings in Darlinghurst and Surry Hills puts commercial kitchens and home kitchens side by side.

We treat individual apartments and tell you what to raise with your building manager, and we run building-wide programs for owners corporations and strata managers. For who is responsible for what in a strata building, see our strata and apartment pest control guide, or our strata pest control service.

Cockroach control for commercial kitchens

A commercial kitchen is the ideal German cockroach habitat: warm, humid, full of food and full of equipment with voids. We run regular, documented cockroach programs for cafes, restaurants, hospitality groups and food storage sites across Sydney, with a service report after every visit for your food safety records, and Safety Data Sheets for every product we use if you ask for them.

For what NSW food businesses are required to do about pests and what an auditor looks for, see cockroaches in commercial kitchens. For ongoing programs, see restaurant and cafe pest control and hospitality pest control.

What a PestOz cockroach job actually involves

Five steps, in this order. For an established infestation, the second treatment is the step that decides whether you see cockroaches again.

1

Inspection

Kitchen, bathroom, laundry and appliances. We find where they are breeding, not just where they are running.

2

Identification

German or one of the larger outdoor roaches, because that changes everything that follows.

3

Treatment

Gel bait, growth regulator and a targeted crack and crevice treatment where the colony lives.

4

Advice

The food, water and clutter keeping them there, and the gaps worth sealing.

5

Second treatment

For an established infestation, a full second treatment at around 5 to 6 weeks, timed to the egg case cycle.

Cockroach control, answered

How much does cockroach control cost in Sydney?

Cockroach control with PestOz is part of our general pest treatment, which starts from $218.90 including GST ($199 plus GST) for an apartment and $306.90 including GST ($279 plus GST) for a house. The one visit also covers ants and spiders. An established German cockroach infestation usually needs a second treatment, charged as a treatment in its own right, and we tell you that, and the price, before we start.

How long does it take to get rid of German cockroaches?

Most homes see numbers drop within the first couple of weeks, but an established German cockroach infestation is not cleared by one treatment. The first treatment needs 4 to 5 weeks to work fully, and a second treatment at around weeks 5 to 6 deals with the young hatching from egg cases. A heavy infestation, plenty of food and clutter, or a neighbouring unit with cockroaches can all make it take longer.

Is it normal to see more cockroaches after treatment?

Yes, for a few days. The treatment flushes cockroaches out of their hiding places, so you may see more of them in the open, sometimes in daylight, before numbers fall. Leave the bait where it is, do not spray over it, and keep food sealed so the bait is the easiest meal in the kitchen.

Is cockroach treatment safe around children and pets?

Yes, when it is applied properly. Gel bait goes into cracks, hinges and voids rather than onto open benchtops, where children and pets cannot reach it. If any part of the job includes a spray, your technician will tell you how long to keep children and pets out of the treated areas.

Do I need to leave home during cockroach treatment?

For a gel bait treatment inside, usually not. If the job includes a spray inside or outside, your technician will tell you how long to stay out of the treated areas before you go back in. Put food, cutlery and pet bowls away before we arrive so nothing needs washing afterwards.

Do you treat cockroaches in apartments and strata buildings?

Yes. German cockroaches move between apartments through shared plumbing, wall cavities and service ducts, so treating one unit on its own often does not hold. We treat individual apartments and tell you what to raise with the building manager, and we run building-wide programs for owners corporations and strata managers, including Waratah, Netstrata and Jamesons.

Do you treat cockroaches in restaurants and commercial kitchens?

Yes. We run regular, documented cockroach programs for cafes, restaurants, hospitality groups and food storage sites across Sydney, with a service report after every visit for your food safety records, and Safety Data Sheets for every product we use if you ask for them. Commercial programs are quoted to the site, based on its size, its equipment and how often it needs a visit.
