Every PestOz treatment is chosen and applied with kids, dogs, cats and the fish tank in mind. Targeted, low-toxicity products placed where pests actually travel, not sprayed across the rooms your family lives in.

Targeted, not blanket sprayed Licensed technicians We tell you exactly what we use
The honest answer

Is pest control safe around children and pets?

Yes, professional pest control is safe around children and pets when it is applied correctly by a licensed technician, using products approved for use in Australia and placed where pests travel rather than sprayed across living areas. The risk in pest control almost never comes from the product itself. It comes from how much is used, and where it is put.

We are a family business, so this is not an abstract question for us. The approach we use in your home is the one we use in ours. That means treating cracks, crevices, wall voids, roof spaces, skirting lines and the outside perimeter, which is where cockroaches, spiders and ants actually live and travel, rather than fogging the rooms your kids play in.

It also means being straight with you. We will not tell you a treatment is "chemical free" or "completely non-toxic", because a treatment that kills nothing is not a treatment. What we will do is use the lowest-toxicity product that will genuinely work, put it only where it needs to be, and tell you exactly what it is, how long to stay off treated areas, and what to do if you are worried.

If anyone in the house is pregnant, has asthma or a chemical sensitivity, or you keep birds, fish or reptiles, tell us when you book. It changes what we use and how we sequence the job.

The method

Targeted treatment, not blanket spraying

This is the whole difference, and it is worth two minutes of your time to understand it.

We find the harbourage first

Pests do not live in the middle of your lounge room. They live in wall cavities, under kickboards, behind appliances, in the roof void and along the outside of the building. Treat there, and the product never has to go where your family is.

Gel and bait instead of spray

For cockroaches and ants, a pinhead of gel placed in a hinge or a crack does more than a litre of spray across a floor, and there is nothing left on the surfaces your kids touch. It also works better, because the pests carry it back to the nest.

Rodent bait stays locked away

Rodent bait always goes in a tamper-resistant, lockable station, positioned where a rat runs and a toddler or a dog cannot reach. Loose bait thrown into a roof space or a garden bed is how pets get poisoned, and we do not do it.

The right product, at the right rate

Every product we use is approved for use in Australia and applied at the rate on the label. Doubling a dose does not double the result, it just puts more chemical in your home, which is exactly what you do not want.

Timing around your family

We work around nap times, school runs and the dog's routine where we can. Most families are back to normal within a few hours of us leaving.

You can see the paperwork

Ask your technician what is being used and you will get a straight answer, plus the safety data sheet if you want it. Nobody at PestOz will be cagey about what is going into your home.

Your part

What to do before and after treatment

Fifteen minutes of preparation makes the treatment work better and keeps everyone comfortable.

Before we arrive

Fifteen minutes, tops.

  • Put away food, dishes and utensils, and clear the kitchen benches.
  • Lift pet bowls, bedding, toys and litter trays out of the areas being treated.
  • Cover fish tanks and switch off the air pump for the interior treatment. Fish are the most sensitive animals in any Australian home.
  • Move birds and reptiles to another room or outside if you can, and tell us where they are if you cannot.
  • Vacuum, particularly for fleas. It lifts eggs and larvae and makes the treatment far more effective.
  • Plan to be out with the kids and pets for the treatment itself. A trip to the park usually covers it.
  • Tell us about pregnancy, asthma, allergies or chemical sensitivity. It genuinely changes what we use.

After we leave

Back to normal the same day.

  • Keep kids and pets off treated surfaces until they are dry. Your technician will tell you exactly how long for your job.
  • Open a few windows when you get home and let the place air out.
  • Wipe down benches and food preparation surfaces before you use them again.
  • Do not mop or hose the treated skirting lines and perimeter for a couple of weeks, or you will wash the treatment away.
  • Leave bait stations and gel exactly where they are. They are placed deliberately, and moving them undoes the job.
  • Expect to see more activity for a week or two, not less. Pests come out of harbourage as the treatment takes effect. It means it is working.
  • Ring us if anything worries you. That is what the number is for.

What it means for your animals

Different animals, different precautions. Tell us what you have and we will plan around them.

Dogs

Out of the house during treatment, back in once surfaces are dry. The bigger risk for dogs is loose rodent bait, which is exactly why ours goes into locked stations they cannot open.

Cats

Same rule, and worth knowing that cats groom constantly, so keeping them off freshly treated surfaces until dry matters more for them than for most animals.

Fish & aquariums

The most sensitive animals in the house. Cover the tank and turn off the air pump before we start the interior, and leave it covered until we say it is clear.

Birds

Birds have very efficient respiratory systems, which makes them sensitive to anything airborne. Move the cage to another room or outside for the treatment where you can.

Reptiles & small pets

Guinea pigs, rabbits, lizards and snakes are all best relocated or covered during the interior treatment. Tell us where the enclosure is so we treat around it.

Chickens & beehives

Backyard chooks and hives change how we treat the outside of the property. Let us know at booking and we will adjust the perimeter treatment accordingly.

Worth saying out loud

The rodent bait question

The genuine risk with rodent control is not the station. It is a dog finding a poisoned rat, or an owl doing the same. We use lockable, tamper-resistant stations placed where rodents run and pets cannot reach, and we tell you where every station is so you can keep an eye on the yard while the treatment runs. If you have a dog that scavenges, say so, and we will plan the job differently, including trapping instead of baiting where that is the better answer.

Frequently asked questions

Child and pet safe pest control, answered

Is pest control safe for babies and young children?

Yes, when it is done by a licensed technician using approved products applied at the correct rate and placed where pests travel rather than across living areas. PestOz treats into cracks, crevices, voids, roof spaces and the outside perimeter, so very little product ends up on the surfaces a child touches. We ask families to be out of the house during the treatment and to keep children off treated surfaces until they are dry. If anyone in the home is pregnant or has asthma or a chemical sensitivity, tell us when you book, because it changes what we use.

How long do I need to keep my pets away after treatment?

As a general rule, until the treated surfaces are dry. Your technician will tell you exactly how long for the products used on your job, because it varies with the treatment, the weather and how much ventilation the room gets. Cats need a little more care than dogs because they groom constantly, and fish, birds and reptiles have their own precautions. Once surfaces are dry, normal family and pet life can resume.

Do I need to move my fish tank?

You do not need to move it, but you do need to cover it and switch off the air pump before the interior treatment starts, then leave it covered until your technician tells you it is clear. Fish and their filtration systems are the most sensitive things in a typical Australian home, because an air pump will draw airborne product straight into the water. Tell us at booking that you have a tank and where it is.

Is your pest control non-toxic?

No, and any pest controller who tells you their treatment is completely non-toxic is either using something that will not work or is not being straight with you. What PestOz does is use the lowest-toxicity product that will genuinely solve the problem, apply it at the label rate, and place it where pests live rather than where your family does. That combination is what makes a treatment safe in practice. We are happy to tell you exactly what we are using and to provide the safety data sheet.

Can rodent bait poison my dog?

Loose bait can, which is why PestOz does not use it in a home with pets. All rodent bait goes into lockable, tamper-resistant stations positioned where a rodent runs and a dog or a child cannot reach, and we tell you where every station is. There is also a secondary risk if a dog scavenges a poisoned rodent. If you have a dog that scavenges, tell us and we will plan the job differently, including trapping rather than baiting where that is the better answer.

Do we have to leave the house during treatment?

For an interior treatment, yes, we ask that people and pets are out while the work is done and until treated surfaces are dry. Most families use it as an excuse for a couple of hours at the park. If only the exterior and roof void are being treated, you can usually stay home. Your technician will tell you which applies before starting, and will let you know when it is fine to come back in.

Why am I seeing more cockroaches after the treatment?

Because it is working. Treatment pushes pests out of the cracks, voids and cavities they normally stay hidden in, so you see insects you never saw before, usually moving slowly or dying. This is normal for one to two weeks after a treatment. If activity is still increasing after that, or you are seeing healthy fast-moving insects a month later, ring us. Our work is backed by a workmanship guarantee.

Can you use something gentler in a nursery or a child's bedroom?

Yes. Tell us which rooms you are most concerned about and we will plan the treatment around them, using physical controls, targeted gel and bait placement, and proofing instead of spray wherever that will still solve the problem. In many homes the nursery does not need to be treated at all, because the pest is entering from the perimeter, the roof void or the kitchen and can be dealt with there.
